Johnny Guarnieri was a talented jazz and stride pianist who made his mark during the swing era of the 1940s. Born in New York City on March 23, 1917, Guarnieri started with classical piano lessons at age 10 before gravitating towards jazz. He gained fame playing with big bands led by Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, and was noted for his ability to imitate the styles of other great pianists like Fats Waller and Count Basie.
Guarnieri was a versatile musician, equally at home playing stride piano or more modern jazz styles. He made history as one of the first jazz musicians to record on harpsichord with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five. Throughout his career, Guarnieri led his own groups and recorded extensively as both a leader and sideman. He remained active in music until his death on January 7, 1985, leaving behind a legacy as one of the swing era's most skilled and adaptable pianists.
