Buddhadev DasGupta

Buddhadev DasGupta (1933–2018) was a renowned Indian classical musician best known for his masterful playing of the sarod, a stringed instrument prominent in Indian music. Born in Bhagalpur district of undivided Bengal (now in Bihar), he was initially trained in vocal and violin under his parents, who were themselves versed in Indian classical music. His transition to the sarod began under the tutelage of Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra, a significant figure in the history of the instrument. DasGupta further refined his skills and deepened his understanding of the sarod under the guidance of Ustad Dabir Khan, a descendant of the illustrious Miyan Tansen lineage.

With a career spanning several decades, DasGupta achieved critical acclaim for his unique style often characterized by its intellectual rigor and technical finesse, blended with emotional depth. His performances were marked by clear articulation, elaborate explorations of ragas, and spirited spontaneity, earning him a distinguished place in the world of Indian classical music. Amongst his most recent celebrated works are "Sarod Euphoria," a compilation that encapsulates his dynamic and soul-stirring performances, "Sanchayan," a curated collection that exhibits his nuanced command of the sarod, and "Sarod Recital By Buddhadev Dasgupta," which showcases his virtuosity and the clarity of his renditions. Buddhadev DasGupta's passing left a profound void in the classical music community, but his recordings continue to inspire and educate aspiring musicians and connoisseurs globally.
