Thomas Søndergård

Thomas Søndergård is a Danish conductor known for his dynamic interpretations and strong rapport with orchestras across Europe and beyond. Originally a percussionist—he played with the Royal Danish Orchestra—Søndergård transitioned into conducting and quickly gained attention for his detail-oriented musicianship and lively stage presence. He made his conducting debut with the Royal Danish Opera in 2005 and has since built a flourishing international career.

He has held notable leadership positions, including Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. As of 2022, he was appointed Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra. Søndergård is particularly admired for his interpretations of late Romantic and 20th-century repertoire, as evidenced by his recordings of works by composers like Prokofiev, Poulenc, Lutosławski, and Szymanowski. His work combines Scandinavian clarity with expressive depth, making him a distinctive voice among today’s conductors.
