Giovanni Battista Draghi

Giovanni Battista Draghi was a seriously influential Italian composer, harpsichordist, and organist who spent most of his career kicking it in England. Born sometime around 1640, he became a pretty big deal in the London music scene, especially after being appointed court composer to Charles II. Think grand, theatrical works – he was all about the opera and dramatic music, contributing significantly to the development of English opera.

Draghi wasn't just composing, though. He was also a sought-after teacher, and his influence can be heard in the work of many English composers who followed. He collaborated with other big names like Henry Purcell and John Blow, and his odes for St. Cecilia's Day were particularly celebrated. He remained a prominent figure in English musical life until his death in 1708.
