Sugar was an American alternative rock band formed in 1992 by guitarist and vocalist Bob Mould, formerly of the influential 1980s punk band Hüsker Dü. Sugar was rounded out by bassist David Barbe, who had worked with Bob Mould on his solo albums, and drummer Malcolm Travis, who previously played with the band Human Sexual Response. They quickly carved out a place for themselves in the early '90s alternative rock scene, with a sound that merged the raw energy of punk with melodic guitar riffs and introspective lyricism.
Sugar's debut album, "Copper Blue," released in 1992, received critical acclaim and earned them a dedicated following. It showcased Mould's talent for crafting catchy, yet powerful songs and was followed by the even more intense and complex EP "Beaster" in 1993. The band's second and final studio album, "File Under: Easy Listening," was released in 1994 and continued their exploration of noisy, guitar-driven melodies wrapped in emotional depth. Despite their short time together, Sugar made a lasting impact before disbanding in 1995. Their significance in the alternative rock movement has only grown over the years, a fact reflected in the remastered editions of their seminal works, ensuring their music continues to reach new audiences and generations.
