Arthur Maia was a celebrated Brazilian bassist, composer, and producer known for his virtuosic playing and genre-defying sound. Blending jazz, funk, samba, and MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), Maia built a reputation as one of Brazil’s leading electric bass players. Throughout his career, he collaborated with a wide range of national and international artists, including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, and even icons like Carlos Santana and George Benson.
Born in 1962 in Rio de Janeiro, Maia began his musical journey as a drummer before switching to bass, where he truly found his calling. He was part of groups like Cama de Gato and the band Black Rio, and later launched a successful solo career, with standout releases like Arthur Maia - Ao Vivo and O tempo e a música. His technical prowess, unique groove, and warm musicality made him a beloved figure in both Brazilian and world music scenes until his passing in 2018.
