Albert Spalding was an American violinist and composer who made a significant mark on the classical music scene in the first half of the 20th century. Born in 1888, Spalding was not only a prodigious performer but also a passionate advocate of American music. He studied in Europe before launching a celebrated performance career, during which he appeared with major orchestras and collaborated with prominent musicians of his time. His warm tone and lyrical playing style earned him accolades, and he recorded extensively, contributing to the legacy of great early 20th-century violinists.
In addition to performing, Spalding was an accomplished composer, writing works for violin as well as chamber and orchestral music. He also served during both World Wars, temporarily stepping away from music to serve his country. After retiring from active performance, he turned his attention to teaching and writing. His recordings—many of which have been reissued and remastered—offer a vivid glimpse into the artistry of a bygone era, showcasing his interpretations of composers like Mendelssohn, Spohr, Brahms, and Mozart.
