Jorge Bolet (1914–1990) was a Cuban-born American pianist, recognized for his profound interpretation of the Romantic repertoire, with a particular mastery over the works of Franz Liszt. Bolet's virtuosic skills were rivaled by his deep lyricism and thoughtful musicality, often praised for breathing new life into familiar compositions. Beginning his piano studies at the age of nine, his talent was evident early, and he continued his education at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied under the legendary pianist Josef Hofmann.
Throughout his extensive career, Bolet gave performances across the globe, yet it wasn't until later in his life that he achieved international fame, becoming especially known for his performances and recordings of Liszt's music. His style was characterized by its rich tonal color, deftly combining technical prowess with a poetic sensibility. Although associated prominently with Romantic works, his discography includes an expansive repertoire, covering composers from Beethoven to Debussy to Rachmaninoff. Bolet's legacy is preserved through numerous recordings, many of which have been remastered and re-released, allowing new generations to experience the magic of his performances. His "Berlin Radio Recordings" and RIAS recordings series demonstrate the depth and versatility of his artistry, cementing his place as one of the great interpreters of the piano canon.
