Syntagma Musicum USACH

Syntagma Musicum USACH is an early music ensemble established in 1978 and officially incorporated into the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH) in 1980. Since then, it has been dedicated to promoting and performing European and American preclassical repertoire, with a particular focus on researching and reviving the American Baroque tradition. The group currently features a cast of skilled musicians, including Jaime Carter (harpsichord, organ), Ángela Espinoza (recorder, oboe), Hernán Muñoz (baroque violin), Franco Bonino (recorder, bassoon, and musical direction), and Gonzalo Cuadra (tenor voice). Under the direction of Rodrigo Díaz Riquelme, a noted early music theorist and performer, the ensemble regularly collaborates with national and international artists across various musical and dance disciplines. Their repertoire spans from the Middle Ages through contemporary compositions, highlighting their versatility and deep commitment to early music scholarship and performance.

The ensemble also includes a Madrigalista Choir that has participated in numerous prominent music seasons and festivals, both in Chile and abroad, such as the “Festival Internacional de Coros de Guayaquil” in Ecuador. Over the decades, Syntagma Musicum USACH has become a key institution in the early music scene in Chile, balancing historical authenticity with innovative programming and maintaining an unbroken tradition of excellence in the performance of early and preclassical music.
