Eugen Cicero

Eugen Cicero, born Eugen Ciceu on June 27, 1940, in Romania, was an illustrious jazz pianist known for his unique fusion of classical music techniques with jazz improvisation - a genre often referred to as "jazz with a classical touch." Throughout his career, he demonstrated an extraordinary dexterity at the piano, combining the technical mastery of a classically trained pianist with the soulfulness of a jazz musician. His stylistic signature involved taking well-known classical melodies and reinterpreting them within the jazz idiom, a pioneering effort that won him acclaim and an international following.

After studying at the Bucharest Conservatory, Cicero made his concert debut at the age of 16. In 1966, he moved to West Germany, where he became a popular performer both live and on TV. Over the years, he recorded prolifically, exhibiting his virtuosic talent and innovative approach across albums such as "Swinging Tschaikowsky" and "Swinging Classics." His later releases, including the reflective "Lullabies," showcase his enduring versatility and emotional depth. Performances like those captured on "Bucharest 1994" and the live recording from "Bernhard Theater Zürich 05.10.1992" have cemented his legacy as a compelling live performer. Eugen Cicero's contributions to the world of music blur the lines between genres, creating a timeless appeal that continues to resonate with classical and jazz enthusiasts alike. Sadly, the music world bid farewell to this celebrated artist when he passed away on December 5, 1997.
