Afrikan Sciences, the experimental electronic project of Oakland-based artist Eric Douglas Porter, has been bending minds since the mid-2000s with his genre-slippery sound. A key figure in avant-garde beat scenes, he’s known for weaving jazz-inspired improvisation, glitchy textures, and West African rhythmic concepts into hypnotic compositions that feel equally suited for headphone meditation and dancefloor hypnosis. His releases on labels like PAN and Plug Research – including recent standouts like *Circuitous* and *Photon Wizard* – showcase his love for modular synth exploration and what he calls "renegade electronics," often blurring the line between electronic production and live instrumental spontaneity. When he’s not crafting solo work, Porter collaborates with fellow boundary-pushers as half of the duo Black Saturn, keeping his sound firmly planted in the future while nodding to diasporic musical roots.
