Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (CFTPA) is the creative moniker of Chicago-based musician Owen Ashworth, who started the lo-fi indie electronic project in 1997. Known for his distinctive blend of vintage electronic sounds, primarily using the Casiotone keyboard from which the project's name derives, Ashworth's music is characterized by its minimalistic style, candid storytelling, and melancholic melodies. CFTPA's lyrical content often revolves around personal narratives and observations of everyday life, resonating with a sense of intimacy and emotional depth.
Over the course of its existence, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has released several albums and EPs that have captured the attention of indie music enthusiasts worldwide. "Etiquette," released in 2006, stands as a high point in the project's discography, highlighting Ashworth's ability to craft poignant, narrative-driven songs. The 2018 remaster of this album allowed both new and longtime fans to experience the record with renewed clarity. Other notable releases include "Vs. Children" (2009), showcasing a more expansive sound and storytelling maturity, and "Answering Machine Music" (1999), CFTPA's debut album, which forged the foundations of Ashworth's signature musical style through lo-fi recordings and experiments in electronic pop. Ashworth ended the project in 2010, moving forward with his music under a new moniker, Advance Base, continuing his evolution as a songwriter and electronic musician.
