Colin Stetson

Colin Stetson is an American saxophonist and multireedist known for his strikingly unique performances, virtuosic techniques, and compositional prowess in the realms of experimental and avant-garde music. Born on March 3, 1975, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Stetson developed his distinctive style through the extended use of circular breathing and the incorporation of the physicality of performance into the sound of his saxophone work. Crafting a personal language on wind instruments, particularly the bass saxophone, he is renowned for his ability to turn a single acoustic instrument into what sounds like an orchestrated ensemble through the use of closely positioned microphones and a vast array of complex, repetitive fingerings and embouchure techniques.

Colin Stetson has sculpted an impressive career both as a solo artist and a collaborator, working with a myriad of artists across various genres, from indie rock bands like Arcade Fire and Bon Iver to luminaries of the experimental scene like Laurie Anderson. His discography is a testament to his versatility and includes a series of critically acclaimed solo albums, the "New History Warfare" trilogy being a significant highlight. More recently, Stetson has expanded his artistic reach into the world of film scores, composing the soundtracks for movies such as the psychological thriller "The Menu" (2022), as well as for the video game "Red Dead Redemption 2". With releases like "Chimæra I" and "In All This Heavy Blue", Stetson continues to push the boundaries of instrumental music, always ensuring his works are immersive, intense, and emotionally charged narratives.
