Jean Ferrat

Jean Ferrat was a beloved French singer-songwriter and poet, best known for his rich baritone voice and deeply political and emotional lyrics. Born Jean Tenenbaum in 1930, he rose to prominence in the 1960s with poignant songs that often addressed social issues, human rights, and his love for France. Deeply touched by the horrors of World War II and the loss of his father in the Holocaust, Ferrat’s work was infused with a passionate sense of justice and humanity.

One of his most celebrated contributions was setting the poetry of Louis Aragon to music, resulting in timeless albums like Ferrat Chante Aragon. Though never one to chase commercial success, his sincerity and lyrical brilliance earned him a loyal following. Ferrat stepped away from the spotlight in the 1970s but remained a respected voice in French music and culture until his passing in 2010. His songs like “Ma France,” “La Montagne,” and “C’est beau la vie” continue to resonate with generations.
