Uruk-Hai

Uruk-Hai is a dark ambient project from Austria, known for creating musical landscapes inspired by the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, especially focusing on the darker characters and themes from Tolkien’s legendarium. The project began in 1999 with members including Defernos (drums and vocals) and Thorgul (guitar and bass), and has released several albums such as *Thousand Lightnings Strike*, *Elbenstahl*, and *The Fellowship* that evoke a mythical and atmospheric sound deeply connected to Tolkien’s mythos.

Additionally, the name Uruk-Hai is famously known as a breed of orcs from Tolkien’s *The Lord of the Rings*, which fits the project’s thematic focus. There's also a separate historical note that an early incarnation of the Norwegian musician Varg Vikernes’ music project was once called Uruk-Hai (previously Kalashnikov) in the late 1980s, which later evolved into Burzum, but this is unrelated to the Austrian dark ambient project known for Tolkien-inspired music.
