Jesús Maria Sanromá

Jesús Maria Sanromá was a Puerto Rican pianist known for his exceptional technique and wide-ranging repertoire. Born in 1902 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, he became one of the most prominent Latin American pianists of the 20th century. Sanromá studied at the New England Conservatory and later worked with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he gained acclaim for his interpretations of both classical and contemporary works. He was particularly known for championing composers from Puerto Rico and Latin America, helping to shine an international spotlight on their music.

Sanromá also collaborated with notable figures such as composer George Gershwin and conductor Serge Koussevitzky. In addition to performing standard classical repertoire, he made significant contributions to the preservation and interpretation of Puerto Rican danzas, such as those by Juan Morel Campos. His recordings remain an important part of Puerto Rico’s musical heritage, and his legacy continues to influence pianists and musicians from the island and beyond.
