Big Brother & The Holding Company

Big Brother & The Holding Company is an American rock band that originated in San Francisco and gained fame in the late 1960s, most notably for their association with Janis Joplin, their dynamic lead singer. Formed in 1965, the band started out as part of the burgeoning San Francisco music scene and soon became a major force with their raw, intense psychedelic sound blending blues, folk, and rock elements. Their breakout moment came with their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, which led to national recognition and their critically acclaimed, second studio album, "Cheap Thrills" released in 1968.

Even after Joplin's departure for a solo career in late 1968 and her subsequent tragic death in 1970, Big Brother continued to perform and record intermittently through the decades. With a lineup that saw various changes over the years, the band retained core members from its classic era, including guitarist Sam Andrew and drummer Dave Getz. Despite the shifts in the music scene since their heyday, Big Brother & The Holding Company's later works, such as "Blow My Mind" and "NuBoogaloo Jam live at CoCo Blues," reflect their continued commitment to live performances and a fusion of genres. Their lasting influence is felt in the world of rock, with a legacy defined by their raw, soulful energy and their role in the rise of one of rock's legendary voices.
