Dr. Orlando Owoh, whose full name was Stephen Oladipupo Olaore Owomoyela, was a distinguished figure in the world of Nigerian highlife music, with a career spanning several decades. Born on February 14, 1932, in Osogbo, Nigeria, he developed a deep passion for music at an early age and went on to form his own band, the Dr. Orlando Owoh and His Omimah Band, after initially playing with a variety of groups.
Orlando Owoh was known for his unique blend of highlife music with Juju, hence creating his own sub-genre known as 'Kennery'. The name 'Kennery' derived from 'canary,' alluding to the sweet, melodious quality of his music. His work was characterized by rich percussion, intricate guitar work, and philosophical lyrics often sung in his native Yoruba language. He managed to touch on politics, love, and social issues, connecting deeply with his listeners.
Throughout his prolific career, Owoh released a number of successful albums and became known for hits like "Omo Pupa," which tells the story of a man who travels abroad and longs for his lover back home, and "Ajuwa Ye," amongst many others. Despite facing challenges—including a period of imprisonment—he remained a beloved figure in music until his death on November 4, 2008. Dr. Orlando Owoh's music continued to influence contemporary artists and remained a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Nigerian music.
