Michael Daugherty is an American composer known for his innovative and evocative works that often draw inspiration from American history, culture, and landscapes. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1954, Daugherty studied music at the University of Iowa and the University of Michigan. His compositions have been performed by major orchestras and ensembles worldwide, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony. Daugherty's music is characterized by its vibrant orchestration, rhythmic vitality, and a unique blend of classical and popular influences. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2011 for his composition "Metropolis Symphony."
