Paul Lewis

Paul Lewis is an English classical pianist renowned for his performances and recordings of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Johannes Brahms, among other composers. Born in Liverpool on May 20, 1972, Lewis studied at the Chetham’s School of Music and later at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he worked closely with the celebrated pianist Alfred Brendel, who became a mentor. His deep immersion in the Austro-Germanic repertoire is reflected in a myriad of critically-acclaimed albums and an extensive international concert career.

Lewis has distinguished himself as one of the leading musicians of his generation, with a discography that primarily focuses on the core piano repertoire from the classical and romantic eras. His recording of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas received particular praise, as has his Schubert sonata series. His delicate touch, insightful interpretations, and emotive depth have positioned him as a pianist of intellectual substance and refined artistry. Lewis' recent projects include an exploration of late Brahms piano works and a recording of French piano duets, demonstrating his versatility and relentless pursuit of expanding his musical horizons. As an artist who combines profound musicality with scholarly understanding, Lewis has become a name synonymous with excellence in classical piano music.
