John Edward Hawkins, better known by his stage name H.A.W.K., was a significant figure in the Houston hip-hop scene and a member of the original Screwed Up Click led by DJ Screw. Born on November 15, 1969, H.A.W.K. gained recognition for his deep voice and smooth flow that became staple characteristics in the Houston rap community. He first gained major attention with his guest appearance on Lil' Troy's 1999 hit single "Wanna Be a Baller."
H.A.W.K. released his debut solo album, "Under H.A.W.K.'s Wings," in 2000, which solidified his standing as a respected solo artist. Throughout his career, he continued to champion the chopped and screwed style, a technique of remixing hip-hop music which involves slowing the tempo of the original track and applying techniques such as skipping beats and record scratching. This was evident in many of his releases, including "Still Wreck’in (Screwed)" and the mixtape series "The Incredible Hawk." Tragically, H.A.W.K.'s life and career were cut short when he was fatally shot on May 1, 2006. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continues to influence the Southern hip-hop genre, and his music remains influential to fans and artists alike.
