The Prisoners

The Prisoners were a British garage rock revival band that emerged from the Medway scene in Kent during the early 1980s. Known for their energetic blend of 1960s-style garage rock, mod, and R&B influences, the band was centered around vocalist and guitarist Graham Day, with Allan Crockford on bass, Johnny Symons on drums, and James Taylor on organ, whose swirling Hammond added a distinctive retro flair to their sound. Though they never broke through to mainstream success, The Prisoners became cult favorites for their raw, melodic songwriting and attitude that bridged punk energy with classic mod aesthetics.

Their debut album, A Taste of Pink, released in 1982, set the tone with gritty production and catchy songwriting. Subsequent records like The Wisermiserdemelza and The Last Fourfathers showcased the band’s evolution, gaining them a devoted following among fans of the UK underground scene. After disbanding in the late '80s, members went on to form or play with other notable acts like The James Taylor Quartet and The Solarflares, cementing The Prisoners' legacy as influential players in British garage and mod revival history.
