Charlemagne Palestine (born 1947) is an American composer, performer, and visual artist known for his influential work in minimalist and drone music. He first came to wider attention in the 1960s and ’70s with long-form pieces that build dense, shimmering overtones through sustained repetition—often performed at high volume and over extended durations.
He’s especially associated with works for pipe organ and piano, including the landmark **“Strumming Music”** (a solo piano piece built from rapidly repeated patterns) and a number of organ recordings that explore the instrument’s physical power and harmonic richness. Alongside his music, Palestine has also been active in the visual arts, and his idiosyncratic, larger-than-life performance persona has become part of his legend within the experimental music world.
