Black Wing is the solo project of the prolific musician Dan Barrett, better known as one half of the Connecticut-based duo Have a Nice Life and a member of other acts such as Giles Corey and Nahvalr. Emerging as a creative outlet allowing Barrett to explore the darker, more electronic and introspective dimensions of his musical expression, Black Wing debuted with the distinctly atmospheric and moody LP "...Is Doomed" in 2015. The sound of Black Wing is characterized by a blend of shoegaze, ambient, and synth-driven melodies, often featuring Barrett's signature baritone voice and introspective lyrical themes.
Over the years, Black Wing has continued to evolve, layering its melancholic ambiance with more varied textures and exploring themes of existential dread, emotional turmoil, and the human condition. The subsequent releases, such as "No Moon" in 2020, showcased a refinement of Barrett's ability to synthesize somber melody with electronic abstraction. The release of singles like "Choir of Assholes / You Think It'll Make You Happy but It Won't" and "Is This Real Life, Jesus Christ" further cemented Black Wing's place in the landscape of dark electronic music, garnering a devoted following attracted to the project's fusion of heavy themes with hauntingly beautiful soundscapes. With each release, Black Wing invites listeners into a reflective journey through the shadows of the psyche, underscored by its artist’s unflinching honesty and innovative sonic craftsmanship.
