The Pastels

The Pastels are an indie pop band that formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1981, initially part of the NME-recognized C86 scene, though they outlasted many of their contemporaries with a unique blend of indie rock, post-punk, and DIY ethos. Fronted by Stephen McRobbie (also known as Stephen Pastel), the group also features Katrina Mitchell, who joined as a drummer and later became a co-vocalist. They have established a reputation for their whimsical and melodic sound, characterized by an endearing shambolic quality and the earnestness of their songcraft, which has inspired countless indie artists following in their wake.

While not often scaling the commercial heights of mainstream success, The Pastels have remained critical darlings and cult favorites over the decades. Known for their charming and understated approach, the band continued to develop and refine their sound with releases like "Mobile Safari" and "Illumination.” In the 2000s, they ventured into film score work with "The Last Great Wilderness," and after a considerable hiatus, they returned to their craft with the warmly received "Slow Summits" in 2013. Collaborative efforts such as "Two Sunsets," a joint album with Japanese pop duo Tenniscoats, demonstrate The Pastels' enduring curiosity and willingness to blend different musical styles and cultural influences, ensuring their persistent relevance in the indie music scene.
