Harry Hibbs

Harry Hibbs was an emblematic figure in the Canadian music scene, particularly renowned for his contributions to Newfoundland folk and traditional music. A skilled accordionist, Hibbs was born on November 11, 1942, in Bell Island, Newfoundland, and his music career truly took off after he moved to Toronto in the 1960s. Known for his lively playing style and friendly persona, Hibbs quickly became a favorite in the Newfoundland expatriate community and beyond.

His debut album, "Harry Hibbs At the Caribou Club," released in 1968, launched him into the spotlight and initiated a series of successful albums, including "More Harry Hibbs At the Caribou Club," and "The Incredible Harry Hibbs." His warm, nostalgic sound, which often featured the accordion—a hallmark of Newfoundland music—resonated with audiences craving a taste of home. Over his career, he recorded more than 25 albums, with titles like "A Fifth of Harry Hibbs," and "Pure Gold," securing his legacy as a folk hero. Harry Hibbs' impact on the Canadian music scene, particularly in promoting Newfoundland's musical traditions, persists as his recordings continue to be celebrated by new generations of fans. Sadly, Hibbs' life was cut short when he passed away at the age of 47 on December 21, 1989, but his music lives on as a testament to his talent and his cultural heritage.
