Smoking Popes

Formed in the suburbs of Chicago in 1991, Smoking Popes is an American pop-punk band that carved out a unique niche in the indie music scene with their blend of punk energy and crooner-style vocals. Frontman Josh Caterer's distinctive voice, often compared to the likes of Frank Sinatra or Morrissey, gives the band's fast-paced guitar-driven tunes an unexpected melodicism and emotional depth. Joined by his brothers Matt Caterer on bass and Eli Caterer on guitar, along with drummer Mike Felumlee, they introduced a stylish alternative to the typical punk sounds of the time.

Over the years, Smoking Popes have built a loyal fan base through their heartfelt performances and consistent album releases. With notable works like "Get Fired," the exquisite angst of "Born to Quit," and the reflective maturity of "Into the Agony," the band has explored themes of love, life, and longing. They have navigated the ups and downs of a career in indie music, enduring a hiatus, lineup changes, and the shifting sands of the music industry. Even with obstacles, the Popes continue to resonate with audiences, both through their studio records and their dynamic live shows, as captured in "Live in '98." With a discography that also includes titles like "This Is Only a Test" and "Complete Control Sessions," Smoking Popes remain a cherished act within the punk community, remembered for both their youthful exuberance and their evolving artistry.
