Percy Humphrey

Percy Humphrey (1905–1995) was a distinguished figure in the world of traditional New Orleans jazz. Born into a family deeply entrenched in the fabric of New Orleans music, Percy was the brother of the famed clarinetist Willie Humphrey and trombonist Earl Humphrey. These siblings were part of the city's rich jazz heritage, with their father being a clarinetist as well. Percy made his mark primarily as a trumpeter, known for his robust and lyrical playing style that charmed audiences and encapsulated the spirit of early jazz.

Throughout his career, Humphrey played with many ensembles, including the Eureka Brass Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which allowed him to tour and gain international recognition while also maintaining strong ties to the New Orleans jazz scene. His catalog of work, including titles like "Percy Humphrey with the New Orleans Joymakers" and "Spirit of New Orleans," depicts a musician dedicated to the preservation and celebration of New Orleans' jazz tradition. His contributions to albums like "Percy Humphrey at the Bull's Club" and "Jazz in Schloss Gracht" showcase his ability to bring exuberance and authenticity to live performances. Even as traditional jazz evolved, Humphrey's work remained a touchstone for the enduring sound of New Orleans, earning him a beloved place in the history of American music.
