He was initiated into music at the age of nine by his father, Ustad Ghulam Jafar Khan, an accomplished sarangi player. Later, he trained under the guidance of Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan, enhancing his skills in the Khayal vocal style and thumri, dadra, and bhajan genres. Khan has performed extensively both in India and abroad, including countries like the UK, Australia, and Thailand. In recognition of his contributions to Indian classical music, he received the Padma Shri award in 2005. His son, Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan, is also a notable classical vocalist.
Khan's musical legacy continues to influence younger generations, with notable releases such as **Raag Madhuvanti**, **Dharohar - The Great Legacy of Rampur - Sahaswan Gharana**, **Versatile Ragas (Classical)**, and **Gharana Rampur Sahaswan** showcasing his mastery and dedication to his craft. His performances are characterized by a wonderful range and a gentle tone, which suit the emotional depth of thumri compositions.
