Matt Haimovitz

Matt Haimovitz is an illustrious cellist, renowned for his exceptional skill and adventurous exploration of a wide array of musical genres, from classical to contemporary. Born in Israel in 1970 and having moved to the United States at a young age, Haimovitz was a musical prodigy, entering the limelight of the classical music world as a teenager. He studied at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Leonard Rose and later expanded his musical education under the guidance of Ronald Leonard at the University of Southern California, followed by a mentorship with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Haimovitz’s career is marked by his dedication to pushing the boundaries of classical music, often incorporating elements from different genres and collaborating with artists across a spectrum of musical styles.

Over the years, Matt Haimovitz has embarked on a journey that has seen him performing in an array of venues far from the traditional concert halls, such as clubs and cafes, aiming to demystify classical music and make it more accessible to a broader audience. His discography showcases a commitment to both the canon of classical cello repertoire and the promotion of new works, as evidenced by his recent releases like "Silvestrov: 3 Postludien: Postludium No. 3," "PRIMAVERA IV: the heart," and "Primavera I: The Wind," among others. These releases highlight Haimovitz’s versatility and his embrace of contemporary compositions, as well as his skill in arrangements for cello ensemble, further establishing him as a pivotal figure in the evolution of the cello as a solo and ensemble instrument in the 21st century. Haimovitz's influence extends beyond performance into education, where he imparts his knowledge and passion for music to the next generation through his teaching position at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
