Domna Samiou

Domna Samiou (1928–2012) was a guardian of traditional Greek music, devoting her life to preserving and promoting the rich tapestry of her country's folk heritage. Born in Kaisariani, Athens, she grew up during a time when the echoes of rural life were still vivid within the bustling cityscape. Under the tutelage of distinguished musicologist Simon Karas, Samiou's passion for authentic Greek folk music was nurtured from her teenage years, which later blossomed into a lifelong quest.

Samiou’s career is marked by her steadfast dedication to collecting and performing the music she cherished. From the cobbled streets of picturesque villages to the magnetic pull of international stages, her voice served as a conduit for stories of love, sorrow, celebration, and myth. Her extensive discography includes works such as "35 Paradosiaka Tragoudia," "Epic Songs of Warriors and Heroes," and "I Tread the Earth Gently," showcasing the breadth and depth of her repertoire. Samiou's performances were not simply concerts, but cultural bridges linking the modern day to a Greece of another era. With each song, she brought to life the landscapes, legends, and spirit of the Greek people, earning her a revered place in the annals of world music history.
