Gilgamesh was a prominent progressive rock/jazz fusion band that formed in the early 1970s, part of the vibrant Canterbury scene which produced other notable acts like Soft Machine, Caravan, and Hatfield and the North. The band was led by keyboardist and composer Alan Gowen, who was known for his innovative approach and compositional prowess, blending complex jazz harmonies with the experimental tendencies of progressive rock.
Throughout their career, Gilgamesh released a series of influential albums which showcased their evolving sound. "Gilgamesh," their self-titled debut album released in 1975, was a significant milestone that captured the band's early development and musical experimentation. The group gained further acclaim with the 1978 release "Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into," which continued to push the boundaries of their genre-blending style. Unfortunately, Gilgamesh's activity ceased shortly after, with members moving on to various other projects; however, their music was celebrated with later archival releases such as "Arriving Twice," which featured unreleased tracks and outtakes, cementing their legacy as pioneers of the fusion movement. Despite never achieving widespread commercial success, Gilgamesh remains a cult favorite among connoisseurs of the avant-garde and progressive music circles.
