Den Danske Salmeduo

Den Danske Salmeduo is a Danish musical duo known for their unique blend of jazz and traditional hymnody, bringing a fresh, instrumental take on classic Danish psalms. The duo consists of Christian Vuust on saxophone and Hans Esbjerg on piano, and they have been active since 1996, performing over 600 concerts across Denmark and Germany. Their music explores a jazzy, melodic interpretation of hymns, capturing the spirit of Danish spiritual and folk traditions with a modern sensibility. They have released several critically acclaimed albums, including renditions of beloved Danish hymns and original compositions inspired by this heritage.

Christian Vuust, a notable figure in the Danish jazz scene and an associate professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, brings his rich background in saxophone and composition to the duo. Together with Hans Esbjerg, they creatively reimagine hymns in a way that resonates both in churches and concert venues. Their repertoire includes titles such as "Jeg gik mig ud en sommerdag," "Du skønne land," and "Gloria," reflecting their commitment to blending sacred music with contemporary jazz influences, thereby offering a fresh listening experience grounded in Danish cultural roots.
