Kino is a British progressive rock band known for its thought-provoking lyrics and atmospheric soundscapes, which combine elements from both classic and modern prog rock. Formed in 2004, the band originally consisted of vocalist and guitarist John Mitchell (also of It Bites, Arena, and Frost*), bassist Pete Trewavas (from Marillion and Transatlantic), drummer Chris Maitland (formerly of Porcupine Tree), and keyboardist John Beck (also from It Bites).
Their debut album, "Picture," was released in 2005, earning acclaim in progressive rock circles for its melodic sensibilities and intricate arrangements. However, after their initial launch, Kino remained largely dormant as a project due to the members' commitments to their respective bands. In 2017, the music scene welcomed a re-issue of "Picture," which allowed both new and old fans to rediscover the band's initial work. This revival seemed to kindle a spark for Kino, as they moved forward with a new lineup and a fresh album. In 2018, with the composition of Mitchell, Trewavas, and new drummer Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson, Frost*), Kino released their long-awaited second album, "Radio Voltaire." Returning with rejuvenated energy, the album showcased a collection of modern progressive tracks including "I Don't Know Why," "Grey Shapes on Concrete Fields," and "The Dead Club," further solidifying their status as a supergroup within the genre. Kino's music is celebrated for its sophisticated musicianship and detailed storytelling, establishing them as a noteworthy presence in the progressive rock landscape.
