The Artis Quartett Wien is an Austrian string quartet with a remarkable 45-year career, founded in 1980 at the University of Music in Vienna. The group consists of Peter Schuhmayer and Johannes Meissl on violins, Herbert Kefer on viola, and Othmar Müller on cello. They studied under Hatto Beyerle and Alfred Staar and further honed their craft in the United States under the LaSalle Quartet. Known for their performances standing up since 2003—a rare practice among string quartets—they have built an international reputation through concerts in prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, the Wiener Musikverein (where they've had a residency since 1988), and major festivals worldwide.
Specializing in classical repertoire, especially works from the Viennese classical tradition and late 19th to early 20th centuries, the Artis Quartett Wien has recorded over 40 CDs for labels such as Nimbus, Sony Classical, and Orfeo. Their extensive discography and performances have earned them numerous awards, including the Echo Klassik and the Midem Classical Award. After a long, successful journey, they announced they will disband at the end of 2025, closing a significant chapter in chamber music history.
