Xavier Sabata

Xavier Sabata is a prominent Catalan countertenor, renowned for his expressiveness and the depth he brings to Baroque operatic roles. Born in Avià, Catalonia, Spain, he began his musical journey by studying acting at Barcelona's Institut del Teatre and voice at the Escuela Superior de Música de Catalunya. Not long thereafter, he specialized in Baroque music at the ESMUC under the tutelage of Marta Almajano, subsequently refining his skills at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Zaragoza with Rosa Domínguez.

Sabata's affinity for the music of George Frideric Handel is unmistakably evident in his discography, with notable recordings such as "Handel: Ottone, HWV15," "Handel: Arminio," and "Handel: Amore X Amore" showcasing his mastery of the composer's repertoire. His artistic versatility exceeds Handel's works, venturing into broader Baroque territory with albums like "L'Alessandro amante," as well as classical and romantic lied with works such as Schubert's poignant "Winterreise." Beyond the studio, Sabata's performances on the international circuit have solidified his reputation, with his nuanced portrayals of complex characters in operas earning critical acclaim. The thematic album "Catharsis," alongside the intriguingly titled "Bad Guys," reveals his capacity to explore the psychological dimensions of antagonists and antiheroes in opera, while "The 5 Countertenors" serves as a testament to his standing within a select group of contemporary vocalists possessing remarkable countertenor capabilities.
