Carolyn Kuan is a dynamic and trailblazing conductor known for her bold programming and commitment to innovation in classical music. Currently the Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, she has earned acclaim for her ability to bring fresh perspectives to both contemporary works and traditional repertoire. Kuan has championed music by living composers and has worked with many ensembles and opera companies across the U.S. and internationally.
Born in Taiwan and raised in the U.S., Kuan became the first woman to be awarded the Herbert von Karajan Conducting Fellowship. She's also passionate about outreach and education, helping to make classical music more accessible to broader audiences. Her collaborations often cross cultural and genre boundaries, and she’s been praised for her fearless approach and inspirational leadership on and off the podium.
