Wolfgang Sawallisch (1923–2013) was a highly respected German conductor and pianist, known for his deep musical insight and elegant interpretations. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he led some of the world's greatest orchestras, including a long and celebrated tenure as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1993 to 2003. Sawallisch was particularly admired for his interpretations of German Romantic repertoire, excelling in the works of Brahms, Strauss, and Wagner. In addition to his conducting career, he was an accomplished pianist, often accompanying singers in lieder performances. His musicianship, understated charisma, and dedication to the essence of the music made him a beloved figure both on and off the podium.
