Gangubai Hangal

Gangubai Hangal was one of the most respected vocalists in Indian classical music, known especially for her deep, powerful voice and commanding performances in the khayal tradition of the Kirana gharana. Born in 1913 in Dharwad, Karnataka, Hangal faced social prejudices and personal challenges during her journey as a female musician in a male-dominated sphere, but she persevered and carved out a lasting legacy. Over her long career, she became a symbol of dedication and artistic excellence in Hindustani music, earning numerous honors, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

Gangubai was celebrated for her soulful renditions of ragas and her ability to convey deep emotion through her music. She trained under Pandit Sawai Gandharva, who also taught other renowned vocalists like Bhimsen Joshi. Even in her later years, she continued to perform and teach, inspiring generations of musicians. Her recordings, such as those featured in archives and compilations like "Live Masterworks From The NCPA Archives" and "The Iconic Gangubai Hangal," continue to be cherished by classical music lovers.
