Nação Zumbi is one of Brazil's most influential and innovative bands, hailing from Recife, Pernambuco. The group was initially formed under the name Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, led by the charismatic frontman Francisco de Assis França, better known as Chico Science. A pioneer of the Manguebeat movement in the early 1990s, the band blended regional rhythms such as maracatu with funk, rock, hip hop, and other global music styles, giving birth to a unique sound that resonated beyond Brazil's borders. Unfortunately, after Science's untimely death in a car accident in 1997, the band continued to forge ahead, dropping "Chico Science" from their name and upholding their legacy under the banner Nação Zumbi.
The evolution of Nação Zumbi has seen them constantly redefining their musical expression while maintaining the core of their distinctive sound. With albums like "Fome de Tudo," "Nação Zumbi," and live projects like "Nação Zumbi Ao Vivo em Recife," the group has shown resilience and adaptability, building upon their roots to explore new sonic territories. Their endeavor "Radiola NZ, Vol. 1" exemplifies their expansive approach—a tribute to various artists that have influenced the band, reworked in Nação Zumbi's inimitable style. Through their enduring career, Nação Zumbi has preserved the essence of Manguebeat and remains an emblem of Brazilian music, celebrated not only for their historical importance but also for their continuous relevance in the contemporary music scene.
