HALCALI was a pioneering Japanese female hip-hop duo formed in 2002, consisting of Haruka (Halca) and Yukari (Yucali). They were notable for blending elements of hip-hop, pop, and electronic music with a quirky, playful style that stood out in the early 2000s J-pop scene. HALCALI debuted with the single “Tandem,” which was produced by members of the hip-hop group Rip Slyme, and they quickly gained attention for their fresh sound and offbeat visual aesthetic.
Their debut album “HALCALI Bacon” made history by becoming the first album by a female hip-hop artist to enter the top ten on Japan’s Oricon album chart. Throughout their career, HALCALI collaborated with a variety of producers and artists, continually evolving their sound. They became known for tracks like “Long Kiss Good Bye” and “Re:やさしい気持ち,” which highlighted their ability to mix rap with catchy pop melodies. HALCALI helped pave the way for future female artists in Japan’s hip-hop and pop music scenes before going on hiatus around 2013.
