Rail Band, also known as Super Rail Band de Bamako or Orchestre Rail-Band de Bamako, is an emblematic ensemble in the landscape of African music, particularly in the genre of Malian music. Formed in 1970, the band was named after the railway line connecting Bamako, the capital of Mali, to Dakar in Senegal, and was initially associated with the Buffet Hotel de la Gare in Bamako, where they were the resident band. Known for intertwining traditional Malian music with the electric guitars and brass of Western sounds, Rail Band is credited with pioneering the Afro-pop and Afrobeat movements, and has significantly contributed to the evolution of Mande music.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Rail Band served as a pivotal platform for many musicians who would go on to achieve international acclaim, including the legendary Salif Keita and Mory Kanté. Their sound is characterized by a seamless fusion of ancient griot traditions, regional folk music styles, Cuban influences, and the jazzy inflection of brass. Through a series of acclaimed albums such as "Soundiata" (Belle époque, Vol. 1), "Mansa" (Belle époque, Vol. 2), "Dioba" (Belle époque, Vol. 3), and "Allo Bamako" (Malian Dance Music of the 70's), Rail Band has cemented their status as one of the most influential groups in the history of African music. Even today, their legacy continues to inspire a new generation of artists and music enthusiasts across the globe.
