Jairus Sharif is a Canadian experimental jazz musician from Calgary, Alberta. He is known for his eclectic blend of free jazz, hip-hop, and blues influences. Sharif's musical journey began as a hip-hop turntablist and DJ, later evolving into playing in garage rock and blues bands. His introduction to avant-garde jazz was inspired by South African saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, leading him to teach himself the alto saxophone. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sharif experimented with synthesizers and drum kits left in his basement, resulting in a series of EPs, including the *Q4DB* series. His debut full-length album, *Water & Tools*, was released in 2022 and longlisted for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize. Sharif's music often explores themes of personal truth and healing, reflecting his personal experiences and artistic growth.
Sharif's recent releases include *Basis Of Unity*, *Bear Witness*, *Mawu*, *Surfacing*, and *Mega Optics*, in addition to *Water & Tools*. His work is characterized by a fusion of improvisation, sound collage, and looping, creating a unique sonic landscape that blends hip-hop abstraction with outsider jazz elements. Sharif's music is deeply personal and reflects his ongoing journey of self-discovery and artistic expression.
