Unwound was an American post-hardcore band hailing from Tumwater/Olympia, Washington. Formed in 1991, the group consisted of Justin Trosper (guitars, vocals), Vern Rumsey (bass), and Brandt Sandeno (drums), who was later replaced by Sara Lund. This lineup would churn through a decade of relentless creativity, chiseling their place into the indie rock hall of fame. Unwound is known for its complex, intertwined guitar work, introspective lyrics, and raw, emotional energy.
The band's music career arc traced a path from the raucous dynamism of early releases like "Fake Train" and "New Plastic Ideas" to the more intricate and introspective expressions found in their later works, including what is often considered their magnum opus, "Leaves Turn Inside You." After eight studio albums and numerous singles and rarities collections like "A Single History: 1991-1997," Unwound's final studio album "Leaves Turn Inside You" was released in 2001 to critical acclaim. Despite disbanding in 2002, their influence has continued to resonate through the post-hardcore and indie rock scenes. Posthumously, fans have been treated to live albums such as "Live Leaves" and anthological collections like "No Energy," which continue to capture the raw and unrefined power of Unwound's live performances and prolific recording sessions.
