Midlake is an American folk rock band hailing from Denton, Texas, formed in 1999 by a group of jazz students from the University of North Texas. The band's sound has evolved over the years from lo-fi, minimalist indie rock to a more lush, band-oriented folk-rock, marked by haunting melodies and layered, atmospheric sounds. The initial lineup was led by vocalist and songwriter Tim Smith until his departure in 2012, after which the other members recalibrated and continued with guitarist and singer Eric Pulido stepping to the fore.
Midlake gained recognition with their second album, "The Trials of Van Occupanther," released in 2006, which brought about the hit single "Roscoe." They are celebrated for their conceptual storytelling and musical narrative, often drawing on themes of nature and folklore. Their rich discography continues to grow, most recently with "For The Sake of Bethel Woods," displaying an enduring commitment to evolving their artistry while maintaining the intimate, nostalgic feeling that has endeared them to a devoted fanbase. Through side projects, remixes, and notable live performances such as "Live At Roundhouse (London / 2022)," Midlake demonstrates versatility and a deep connection with the evolving landscape of modern rock music.
