Samuel Capricornus

Samuel Capricornus, whose real name was Samuel Friedrich Bockshorn (1628–1665), was a significant early Baroque composer and music director of Czech-German descent, recognized for his distinctive contribution to sacred and secular music of the 17th century. His career flourished despite the tumultuous times of the Thirty Years' War, and he is known especially for bridging styles between the Venetian polychoral traditions and the developing German concertato style. Capricornus was a contemporary of notable composers such as Heinrich Schütz and was eminent for his role in the transmission of Italian musical forms into the German-speaking countries.

Capricornus' compositions have been revitalized in recent recordings, showcasing the breadth and depth of his work. Among these, "Jubilus Bernhardi" collection stands out, demonstrating his prowess in setting religious texts to emotive and intricate melodies. Similarly, the album "Samuel Capricornus: Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt (Sacred Concerts)" includes a selection of his spiritually uplifting sacred concerts, marked by their dramatic and vivid expression of religious fervor. Further offerings such as "Capricornus: Theatrum Musicum & Leçons de ténèbres" capture his talent in creating a theatrical musical experience that resonates with the essence of the Baroque period. Through the dedicated work of early music specialists, Samuel Capricornus's legacy continues to be appreciated for its rich contribution to the tapestry of early European classical music.
