The Olivia Tremor Control emerged as a central pillar of the mid-1990s psych-pop movement, closely associated with the highly inventive Elephant 6 Recording Company collective. Founded in Ruston, Louisiana, the core members of the ensemble, Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart, along with drummer Eric Harris and multi-instrumentalist John Fernandes, crafted a distinctive sound that married the whimsy and melodic ingenuity of 1960s psychedelia with the avant-garde experimentalism of tape music and sound collage. The band was based in Athens, Georgia, a hotbed for indie music, which helped them grow their following.
The group's full-length albums, "Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle" (1996) and "Black Foliage: Animation Music" (1999), are widely regarded as modern psychedelic masterpieces, reflecting their ability to conjure otherworldly soundscapes whilst maintaining a core of catchy, pop-sensible songwriting. Though The Olivia Tremor Control disbanded in early 2000, their sporadic reunions have been met with enthusiasm from a devoted fan base. The untimely death of singer-songwriter Bill Doss in 2012 was a profound loss, but the remaining members have continued to keep the band's legacy alive through performances and releases like "Presents: Singles and Beyond" and the "John Peel Session," which showcase the enduring appeal of their richly textured and imaginative work.
