U-Roy, also known as Ewart Beckford, was a pioneering Jamaican vocalist widely regarded as one of the founders of the toasting style that would go on to influence hip-hop, dancehall, and modern reggae. Rising to prominence in the late 1960s and early '70s, U-Roy revolutionized the sound system scene with his rhythmic, spoken-word style laid over instrumental versions of popular reggae tracks. His 1970 single “Wake the Town” is often credited with helping to bring the DJ to the forefront of the reggae sound.
Known as “The Originator,” U-Roy’s influence spans decades, with later generations of artists citing him as a foundation for their own musical journeys. His collaborative 2021 album Solid Gold showcased this lasting impact, featuring contributions from artists like Shaggy, Santigold, and Jesse Royal. Beyond just his vocal prowess, U-Roy left a legacy of innovation and cultural resonance, helping shape the global sound of reggae and beyond.
