Oskar Nedbal (1874-1930) was a Czech composer, conductor, and violist, probably best known today for his light, charming operettas like *Polish Blood (Polská krev)* and *The Vineyard Bride (Die Winzerbraut)*. He had a pretty diverse career, though! He was a founding member of the Bohemian Quartet, a renowned string quartet that toured extensively at the turn of the 20th century. He also served as the principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and later founded the Czech Philharmonic. Beyond his operettas, Nedbal composed a variety of music, including ballets, tone poems, and chamber works. Several of his works, like *From Tale to Tale*, draw inspiration from folk tales and children's stories.
While his music enjoyed immense popularity during his lifetime, Nedbal's life ended tragically. Facing financial difficulties and accusations of inappropriate behavior, he took his own life in 1930. Despite this sad end, his operettas continue to be performed and enjoyed, keeping his legacy alive and introducing new audiences to his melodic and often humorous style.
