Philharmonia Chorus

The **Philharmonia Chorus** is an esteemed independent symphony chorus based in London, founded in 1957 by Walter Legge to complement the Philharmonia Orchestra. Established as a choral counterpart to the orchestra, the chorus quickly gained recognition for its unique blend of British choral tradition and German musical training, resulting in a dramatic and homogeneous sound. Over the years, the Philharmonia Chorus has performed over 900 concerts and made more than 100 recordings, collaborating with leading orchestras and conductors across Europe. The chorus has been led by several notable Chorus Masters, including Wilhelm Pitz, Walter Hagen-Groll, Norbert Balatsch, Heinz Mende, Horst Neumann, David Hill, Robert Dean, and currently Gavin Carr.

Recent years have seen the Philharmonia Chorus continue its tradition of high-quality performances, including a Mahler cycle with the Orchestre National de Lille, Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem" with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Handel's "Messiah" at the Royal Albert Hall. The chorus operates its own Professional Singer and Student Schemes to complement its membership of skilled amateur singers. It is a Registered Charity and regularly performs at prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and King's College, Cambridge.
